St Columba of Iona Purple Stole Main fabric is hand dyed pure wool. St Columba travelled to the Isle of Iona in a corracle (a kind of shallow basket-like boat) in the 6th century where he founded a monestary. It was from here that Columba travelled to the northern parts of Scotland bringing Christianity to the Picts. The cross is based on the Cross of St John on Iona and is stitched with silver metallic thread. The spiral waves are also stitched with silver thread and the figure in the corracle is created with a combination of appliqué and silver and rayon threads. The tartan (cross and lining) is the Saint Columba tartan designed in 1997 to mark the 1400th anniversary of the saint's death. |
